Setup Instructions

Instructions to guide laptop set up in preparation for the start of school at BSGC on 1st September 2020.

Update Operating System

New Laptops not purchased from the school’s recommended supplier (Comercial AV)

Plug the laptop and turn it on.

Follow the instructions on the screen to configure the operating system.

Connect the laptop to internet via a cable or, when the option shows up, connect it to your WiFi network.

Leave the laptop on and connected to the network for about 12 hours. This should be plenty of time for the laptop to download any required updates.

If a pop up window shows appears saying something like the “Updates are ready to be installed” select the “Install now” or “Install now and restart/reboot” option.

Laptops currently owned and used by BSGC students

Turn the laptop on.

Make sure the laptop is connected to the internet through either cable or WiFi.

Once the operating system (Windows/MacOS) has finished loading, check for notifications on available updates (Bottom-right corner of the screen on Windows, top-right corner of the screen on Mac).

If there are any updates pending, click on “Download and Install”

If a pop up window shows up informing the “Updates are ready to be installed” select the “Install now” or “Install now and restart/reboot” option.

Install Antivirus

It is a strict requirement that all laptops brought into the school have a commercial paid for Antivirus package installed, and that everyone uses the same software.

The school’s existing antivirus provider is ESET, and the license key for this software will be provided to all students on the first day.

Prior to returning to school please download and install this software by clicking on one of the two links below:

Finish the installation as a Trial. Registration will be completed by inserting the licence key during the first day of school.

Install Chrome

In addition to pre-installed Microsoft Edge (or Safari on a Mac) we recommend the installation of the Chrome web browser, this is to provide a common browser in case of compatibility problems.

You can download and install it from here https://www.google.com/chrome/

Install Office 365

New Windows 10 laptops usually come with a trial version of Microsoft office pre-installed. If this is the case, all that is requiered is to upgrade the product from the trial version to the full version by inputting a license key.

The required license details for all our Year 8 to Year 13 students is their existing school network username and password.

If the students existing network username is fred.smith, then for activating Office 365 the username This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. should be entered. Normally all our network usernames are in the format first name/dot/first surname.

If the student has forgotten their password, they can enter a new one on their return to school.

If your machine does not already have Office 365 pre-installed, or is a Mac, please follow these steps:

New Secondary students – this includes all Year 7 pupils and all students new to BSGC

New students do not currently have a network username and password. Please bring the laptop to school in the second week of term when we will help you with your username, password, and installing the software if necessary.

Year 8 to Year 13 students

Current BSGC students should log into the Outlook account by opening a web browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari).

Go to https://www.outlook.com/tafira.bsgc.es

Log in with the network username in the format as above (ie. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and then use their current network password.

Once logged in click on the nine white dots at the top left corner:

On the menu, click on Office 365 and then “Install Office”.

Install VLC

VLC Player is a media player for video and audio files. It is secure and free, and usually offers better quality and more compatibility options than basic preinstalled media players. We recommend that VLC is installed on Windows machines.

VLC can be downloaded from here: https://www.videolan.org/
