School Development Plan

2019 - 2021

Rationale

The British School of Gran Canaria is fundamentally committed to the principles of improvement and development, viewing the obligation to extend and improve the school and the education it provides as a basic and unquestionable responsibility. In order to fulfil this responsibility the school periodically develops School Development Plans (SDPs) that identify key areas for improvement and growth, with specific objectives for improvement that provide clarity and focus for this work. The cycle of SDPs have usually spanned three academic years with the timeline over recent plans covering the following years: 2012-15, 2015-18 and 2019-21

The school’s SDPs are constructed utilising the input of important and influential sources, including the school’s ISI inspection reports, international examination results, benchmarking and diagnostic data, consultation with governors, staff, parents and students, and professional development courses and conferences. In all instances, the work of SDP contemplates and moves the school closer towards its stated Vision and Mission.

The current SDP has four main development areas:

  • Physical and Emotional Health and Wellbeing – Develop a community that is aware, articulate and able to identify and improve wellbeing and health.

  • Global Citizenship – Prepare our students to be capable, compassionate and active custodians of the world.

  • Attract and Retain – Ensure that potential students, families and staff are aware and aligned to the vision, values and worth of The British School so that they are drawn to the school, committed to making positive contributions and becoming active participants and champions of its education.

  • Resources and Infrastructure – Provide facilities and resources that support dynamic and active learning within a growing school, whilst contemplating physical health and wellbeing and our roles as global citizens.

Within these areas, responsibility and specific work are delegated to school teams, sectors and individuals who work to bring the wider objectives to fruition and practical reality at a classroom and pupil level. The SDP and its specific work have proved to be invigorating and inspiring, especially when achievements and developments are noted in the teaching and learning within the school’s classrooms, in the daily school environment and through the wider learning opportunities provided.
